I am primarily a landscape painter, working directly from nature in a thick, vigorous impasto with a strong emphasis on color. Color expresses excitement and emotion as well as establishing and defining space and form. An expressionist at heart, I believe that color and form may be freely interpreted and exaggerated, but it is important to me to paint from nature.

Michael Woodard is a self-taught marine artist who creates contemporary marine scenes from his own nautical experience. He developed an interest in boats as a teenager through his active participation in a Sea Scout program in the San Francisco Bay area.  Michael is a 1981 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. The artist served as a crew member aboard several vessels, including serving as the Assistant Engineer aboard the Liberty Star from 1982 to 1985. He is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists and the International Society of Marine Painters. Michael and his wife, Sally, are residents of Tallahassee, Florida.
