COCA FOR THE CLASSROOM - APPLICANT INSTRUCTIONS

COCA for the Classroom is a free resource guide for area teachers. COCA’s goal is to connect artists and arts organizations to area teachers through this publication. If you have any questions or would like a consultation or a courtesy review of your COCA for the Classroom application please contact Amanda Karioth Thompson at 224-2500 or amanda@cocanet.org.


BASIC ELIGIBILITY:
Are you an artist, cultural organization, or business that:

  • Works in one of the following disciplines: visual arts (i.e. painting, sculpture, crafts, photography), performing arts (i.e. theatre, music, dance), literary arts (i.e. creative writing, poetry, storytelling), history/heritage/heritage (including folk arts), media arts (i.e. film, video), or multiple disciplines? (Science- or math-based activities with arts components will also be considered.)

AND

  • Has previous experience in a K-12 school based setting?

AND

  • Offers school-based programs that occur during the traditional school day, on or off school grounds.

AND

  • Offers arts education programs that address elements of any of the Sunshine State Standards and/or FCAT focus areas?

AND

  • Is based in Tallahassee or the immediate surrounding area (within 100 miles)?

AND

  • Complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, including but not limited to those that bar discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disabilities?

Please note that programs meeting these minimum eligibility standards are not automatically qualified for approval for COCA for the Classroom. Inclusion is contingent upon a panel review.

The following are not eligible for inclusion in the directory:

  • Programs that occur outside of the K-12 school day, including after-school programs held at schools
  • Student groups, or organizations that are primarily recreational, social, or social service in nature
  • Organizations not open to the general public
  • Programs of a religious nature
  • Programs that are primarily intended to market outside services or solicit participation in non-school-based classes
  • Programs that offer entertainment only without educational components

Note: Interested parties who do not meet one or more of these criteria may be considered on an individual basis, particularly if they provide something else of interest to educators. Please contact Amanda Thompson at 850-224-2500 or amanda@cocanet.org to discuss your program, product, or service.

REVIEW CRITERIA

  • Artistic excellence of the organization or the artist and program
  • Clear program objectives and outcomes
  • Demonstration of an understanding of the Sunshine State Standards and/or FCAT focus areas
  • Ability to carry out the program
  • High quality study guides and/or sequential lesson plans which include the name of the arts education provider, the lesson’s goal, student outcomes, connections to the Sunshine State Standards and FCAT focus areas, student activities, materials and supplies, and assessment for each unit of instruction
  • Previous experience in a K-12, school based setting on or off site with K-12 students attending your programs

Note: COCA favors applicants who comply with Fair Labor Standards and pay professional performers, artists, and supporting personnel at least the minimum level of compensation paid to people employed in similar activities.
